Top 10 Tips for Saving Money

To save additional money, also consider biking as a means of exercise and transportation. Chuck Coleman, a viewer in Portland, Ore., says he "rides a bicycle 10 miles to work. I had to do a brake job on my bicycle last week and it cost me $6.50. That should last for another six months."

6. Library Card For all of your entertainment needs, consider your public library. At most libraries, not only can you read the hottest bestsellers, but you can checkout DVDs, CDs and surf the Internet, all for free.

In larger cities like Chicago, for example, the public library orders its books the same time as local retailers so readers do not have to wait months to read the newest bestsellers. Assuming your child is in diapers for 2 years, you will likely pay $550 to $800 to launder them, bringing the total cost for cloth diapers to $750 to $1,160. However, the cost of disposable diapers for the first 2 years of your child's life will likely cost more than $1,800. If you cannot do without disposable diapers, there are ways to minimize your costs, such as using generic diapers and selecting the smallest diaper that will fit your child. Although the cost per box of diapers does not necessarily go up as the diapers get bigger, the number in each box gets smaller, meaning you are paying more for each diaper.

8. Selling Online

Remember, Amazon and eBay are not only places where you can buy goods, but they are also venues where you can sell goods. Both of these sites are very navigable, and are an easy way to make some extra cash by selling those books and CDs you no longer need.

9. Home Haircuts: Home haircuts are not as scary as they sound. While some salons will cut a child's hair for as little as $2.99 to $10 (for children under 10 years old), it is nowhere near the bargain price of a home haircutfree. Additionally, with the price tag of an adult haircut costing upwards of $16, learning to use shears could save your family significant money.

10. Old is New Again: Vintage is back in style  good news for resale shoppers. If you have not been browsing the racks at a resale store or second hand clothing boutique, you could be missing out on the chic (and cheap) styles. Our viewers agree, with Dr. Barbara Neuby of Kennesaw, Ga., commenting that she "shops for clothes at second hand shops [and finds] lots of perfectly good castoffs."
